Abstract

To identify relationship between internet addiction and excessive daytime sleepiness among nursing students.

Quantitative research approach and cross-sectional descriptive research design was adopted. Researchers obtained written informed consent from parents and assent from nursing students. Researchers collected data from 172 nursing students using internet addiction test (IAT) and Epsworth Sleepiness scale. The study was conducted at selected nursing college in Chennai.

58(33.7%) had a mild level of internet addiction, 15(8.7%) had moderate level of internet addiction and 1(0.6%) had a severe level of internet addiction among nursing students. 77(44.8%) students had excessive sleepiness depending on the situation, 53(30.8%) had abnormally sleepy, 31(18%) had average sleepy and 11(6.4%) had excessive sleepy among nursing students. There was a fair positive correlation was found between internet addiction and daytime sleepiness among nursing students.

The study concluded that one third of the nursing students had mild and moderate level of internet addiction and daytime sleepiness. Students must reduce the internet use and follow sleep hygiene in order to maintain their good health and wellbeing.
