To evaluate the effectiveness of assertiveness training on self-esteem and assertive behavior among nursing students.
Quantitative research approach, pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test research design was used. 220 B.Sc Nursing Students were selected using purposive sampling technique. Researchers obtained written informed consent from parents and nursing students. Rosenberg self-esteem scale and Rathus assertiveness scale were used to evaluate self-esteem and assertive behavior. The study was conducted at selected nursing college in Chennai. On the first day demographic details were obtained through a structured profile followed by pre-test level of self-esteem and assertive behaviourwas assessed. Researcher administered assertiveness training which includes Power-point presentation, worksheets, self-talk training, quiz, role play and games regarding assertive behavior, selfesteem, self-confidence, self-awareness, and sweetest way of saying ‘No’ to the students. Posttest assessment was done on the 8th day.
In regard to self -esteem the pre and post -test mean score was 9.91±2.29 and 19.43±3.34 (t = 35.038, p<0.001). With regard to assertive behavior, pre and post -test mean score was -54.26±21.45 and 59.50±16.1 (t = 62.192, p<0.001). There was a moderate positive correlation was found between self-esteem and assertive behavior among nursing students.
The study concluded that assertive training is an effective intervention to enhance the self-esteem and assertive behavior among nursing students.
