Effectiveness of Nurturing Resiliency Approach [NRA] on Perceived Stress, Psychological Well Being and Resilience Among Nursing Students at Selected College, Chennai

Abstract

To evaluate the effectiveness of nurturing resiliency approach on perceived stress, psychological well-being and resilience among nursing students.

Quantitative research approach and pre-experimental research design was adopted. Researchers obtained written informed consent from parents and assent from nursing students. The study was conducted at selected nursing college in Chennai.Researchers collected data from 225 nursing students using Cohen perceived stress scale, Ryff psychological well-being scale and Connor-Davidson resilience scale. Nurturing resiliency approach is a planned interventional program given for a period of 7 days and post test was conducted after the intervention.

In the pre-test, 198(88%) had severe perceived stress and 27(12%) had moderate level of stress and after the intervention, 206(91.6%) had moderate level of stress and 19(8.4%) had low level of stress. In the pre-test, 172(76.4%) had moderate level of psychological wellbeing and 53(23.6%) had poor psychological wellbeing and after the intervention, 154(68.4%) had good psychological wellbeing and 71(31.6%) had moderate level of psychological wellbeing.In the pre-test, 157(59.8%) had moderate level of resilience, 44(19.6%) had good resilience and 24(10.7%) had poor resilience and after the intervention, 164(72.9%) had good resilience and 61(27.1%) had moderate level of resilience. There was a mild negative correlation was observed between perceived stress and psychological wellbeing (r = - 0.543) and perceived stress and resilience (r= - 0.403) and mild positive correlation was observed between psychological wellbeing and resilience (r = 0.785).

The study concluded that resilience training reduced the perceived stress and improved psychological well-being among nursing students.
