Abstract

Stress can be described as a situation that disturbs, or is likely to disturb the normal physiological or psychological functioning of a person. Life without stress cannot be imagined. Psychological stress is more prevalent among nursing students. This study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of Humor Therapy upon stress among B. Sc. (N) 1st year students. Study was conducted using true experimental research design. The sample included 80 students (40 in control group and 40 in experimental group) and were selected using purposive sampling technique. Data was collected by self-administration method using demographic variable performa and Cohen et al perceived Stress Scale. Results revealed that the difference in mean and standard deviation of stress scores of nursing students between pre test and post test of control group (M=31.9, 31.02 SD= 5.62, 4.96) was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Whereas, in experimental group the difference in mean and standard deviation between pre test and post test (M=31.02, 22.4, SD=3.6, 3.62) was statistically significant (p<0.05). The study findings revealed that Humor therapy is effective in reducing stress among students. Hence humor therapy can be planned and organized by the teachers and concerned others as a routine stress relieving measure for nursing students.
