Jacobson's progressive muscle relaxation technique on social anxiety among high school students

Abstract

Social anxiety is a disorder in which person has an excessive and unreasonable fear of social situations. This study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of Jacobson's Progressive Muscle Relaxation technique upon social anxiety among high school students at selected school, Coimbatore. Pre experimental research design was used and a total of 137 high school students were selected by purposive sampling technique. Data were collected by demographic variable proforma and Liebowitz social anxiety scale for children and adolescents. The JPMR technique was administered to 45 students who had moderate to very severe social anxiety. The intervention was found to be effective (t =14.40, df= 44, p<0.05) in reducing the social anxiety. Social anxiety was significantly associated with gender and area of residence. This study concludes that Social anxiety is common among high school students and proves that Jacobson's Progressive Muscle Relaxation is effective in reducing social anxiety among students.
