Sedation management forms an integral component of the critically ill patient. The role of nurses in assessing and maintaining optimal sedation is paramount.
The main objectives of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of comprehensive training on sedation management upon the knowledge and practice among nurses.
A pre-experimental study with one group pre and post-test design was used after obtaining ethical clearance and setting permission among 70 nurses working in critical care unit were selected by purposive sampling method. The study was conducted in selected hospitals in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Pre-test level of knowledge and practice regarding sedation management were collected by predetermined and pretested tools such as demographic variable Performa, structured knowledge questionnaire and observation checklist regarding sedation management. Then the comprehensive training on sedation management was administered for the nurses working in critical care unit. It was conducted in 2 sessions (2 hours/session) for 2 days. Post test was conducted after 7days of the comprehensive training on sedation management.
Study findings revealed that the mean and standard deviation of post-test knowledge scores in Kerala and Tamil Nadu (M=21.08, SD=3.80, M=20.46, SD=3.18) was higher when compared to the pre-test knowledge score (M=13.86,SD=3.96, M=14.9, SD=2.71)with”t-valueof7.02& 7.87 at p<0.001.The Mean and Standard deviation of post-test practice scores in Kerala and Tamil Nadu (M=21.69, SD=0.86, M=25.31, SD=1.06) was higher when compared to the pretest practice scores (M=18.28, SD=0.45, M=20.69, SD=1.04) with ‘t’ value of 20.78&18.40 at p<0.001.
Comprehensive training on sedation management enhanced the knowledge and practice of nurses working in critical care unit.
