Abstract

Phlebitis is a common complication of intravenous (IV) therapy, leading to pain, erythema, and potential thrombus formation. Aloe Vera (Aloebarbadensis Miller) is known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and wound-healing properties, making it a promising natural intervention for preventing and managing phlebitis. This study aims to assess the therapeutic potential of Aloe Vera extract in preventing and reducing phlebitis among patients receiving intravenous medications. A quasi-experimental study was conducted among 60 hospitalized patients undergoing IV therapy, divided into an experimental group (Aloe Vera application) and a control group (standard care). Phlebitis severity was assessed using the Visual Infusion Phlebitis (VIP) scale before and after the intervention. The experimental group demonstrated a significant reduction in phlebitis severity compared to the control group. Aloe Vera extract was found to be effective in minimizing inflammation, reducing pain, and enhancing IV site healing. Aloe Vera extract is a safe and effective natural remedy for preventing and reducing phlebitis in patients receiving IV therapy. Integrating Aloe Vera into clinical practice may improve patient outcomes and reduce IV-related complications.
