Tobacco use leads most commonly to disease affecting the heart, liver and lungs. Smoking is a major risk factor for heart attack, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (including emphysema and bronchitis), and cancer particularly lung larynx, mouth and pancreas. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding ill effects of tobacco among the students studying in selected Engineering College at Chennai. 30 students who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were selected randomly. The pre-test was assessed using a semi structured questionnaire and structured teaching programme was given to students followed by posttest. The result showed that the mean level of knowledge was 13 with SD= 9.43 in pre-test and 26 with SD= 21.2 in post-test, there was a statistically significant difference with paired ‘t’ value of 3.41 at p<.05 level.
