Abstract

Triage nurses play a pivotal role in the emergency department. Hospital triage is part of the emergency department structure which is done by emergency nurses. This study aimed to determine knowledge level of the nurses about triage. A descriptive design was used to assess the knowledge using a structured questionnaire. Samples were selected by purposive sampling technique among 30 emergency nurses. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that majority of the nurses (70%) had adequate knowledge, 27% had moderate level of knowledge and only 3% had inadequate knowledge regarding triaging. Triage nurses knowledge have been cited as influential factor in triage decision making. Hence nurses need to be empowered with adequate training on triage in order to develop competencies and improve patient outcomes.
