Abstract

The Intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is a mechanical device that increases myocardial oxygen perfusion andcardiac output in critically ill patients with cardiac disease. This study was done to assess the effectiveness of a Capacity Building Programme regarding care of Patient with IABP upon the level of knowledge and Practice among Nurses.

A pre-experimental study with one group pre test post test research design was carried out among 60 Nurses working in Cardiac unitsat selected hospitals, Chennai. The pre test level of knowledge and practice regarding care of patient with IABP was assessed. Capacity building programme on care of patient with IABP was administered followed by post-test.

After the capacity building program, the majority of them had moderately adequate knowledge (73.33%) and average level of practice (78.33%) regarding care of patient with IABP. Capacity building programme regarding care of patient with IABP enhanced the knowledge and skill among Nurses.
