Abstract

Background: Phlebitis is an important issue in all critically ill patient receiving prolonged intravenous infusion. One of the commonly performed and at times lifesaving procedure in hospital is the placement of Peripheral Intravenous Catheter (PIC). 1,2,Adherence to the best standards of nursing practice is the fundamental principle to improve patient outcome and prevent nursing procedure related-infections. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge of nurses on prevention of phlebitis among nurses working in CCU.Methods and Materials:A cross sectional study was conducted among 30 nurses selected by purposive sampling technique at selected hospitals in Chennai, using demographic variable proforma of nurses, structured knowledge questionnaire on Prevention of phlebitis and standardized phlebitis scale was used to check for the practice. Results: Around half ofthe CCU nurses had moderately adequate knowledge (53.4%) and 13.3% of them had adequate knowledge regarding prevention of phlebitis. Almost all the nurses had a moderate level of practice on prevention of phlebitis Conclusion: This study finding shows that only just more than half of the nurses deemed to possess moderately adequate knowledge and demonstrate compliance on prevention of phlebitis.
