Knowledge, attitude & practice on specimen transportation among hospital attenders in a selected hospital, Pondicherry

Abstract

The accuracy of laboratory testing procedures is crucial to the proper diagnosis and treatment of patients Delay in the transportation of blood samples to the laboratory may cause alteration in test results. The present study was aimed to assess the Knowledge, Attitude & Practice on Specimen Transportation among Hospital Attenders in Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences. Study was conducted among hospital attenders in medical wards, surgical wards and critical care units. Seventy Participants were selected by simple random sampling. Among the 70 Hospital Attenders, 4(5.7%) had inadequate knowledge, 49(70%) had moderately adequate knowledge and 17(24.3%) had adequate knowledge. Regarding the attitude among hospital attenders on specimen transportation, was 13 (18.5%)3 had moderately favorable attitude and 57(81.4%), had favourable attitude. The assessment of practice on specimen transportation among hospital attenders revealed that 3(4.3%) had inadequate Practice and 67 (95.6%), 67 had adequate Practice. There is no association between the knowledge, attitude and practice with the selected socio demographic variables. Hospital Attenders who transported the specimen from the ward to laboratory have adequate level of practice because of their daily activity and experience. The current study recommended that they have to be educated about the specimen transportations.
