Abstract

Nurses provided with specialized training in peripheral vascular access, along with supportive organizational structures and processes, results in improved patient outcomes and decreased complications. Inadequate knowledge of intravenous fluid therapy among nurses is a leading cause of errors resulting in increased morbidity and mortality in hospitalized patients. Objectives of the study were to assess the pre-test level of knowledge regarding intravenous therapy among staff nurses, to determine the effectiveness of planned tutoring by comparing the pre-test and post-test scores, and to associate the level of knowledge with selected demographic variables. One group pretest and post design was adapted with 60 samples;validated multiple choice questionnaire was used to collect data by convenient sampling technique. Results showed that there is a significant difference found between the mean pre-test score 9.17 ± 1.96 and the mean post-test score of knowledge is 12.3 ±1.2. It shows that planned tutoring is effective to improve the knowledge regarding Intravenous therapy and its complications among staff nurses. In conclusion, this study found that many nurses have moderate to inadequate knowledge regarding intravenous therapy and its complications. This highlights the need for further education and training in this area to improve patient outcomes and reduce the risk of complications.
