Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Regarding Drug Administration Among the Nurses in A Secondary Level Hospital

Abstract

Drug administration is an essential part of nursing practice, which requires a sound knowledge base in order for medication to be administered safely.

A non-experimental descriptive design was used to assess the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice regarding drug administration among the nurses in Bon Secours Hospital, Molasur, Kanchipuram District. 30 samples were selected by simple random sampling technique. Self-administered questionnaire on Knowledge and Attitude and Observational checklist was used to assess the practice regarding drug administration.

16 (53.3%) of the staff nurses had fair knowledge, 16 (53.3%) of the staff nurses had favorable attitude on drug administration, majority 30 (100%) of the Staff Nurses followed all the observational checklist criteria while administering the drugs. All of them 30 (100%) not checked for any allergy, 16 (53.3%) of them not performed hand hygiene.15 (50%) of them provided patient education as necessary and 16 (53.3%) of them followed up patient response for medication. Majority 26 (87%) of the staff nurses had good practice.

The current study concluded that, there is a need for continuous observation among staff nurses to reduce medication errors.
