Emotional intelligence (EI) is one such personal characteristic, and is increasingly referred to as having a potential role in medicine, nursing and other health care professions. It is suggested that EI is important for effective practice, particularly with respect to delivering patient-centred care. It has been observed that many of the nurses lack assertive communication. The investigator made an attempt to assess the emotional intelligence and assertive communication among nurses with the objective of identifying their levels and find out the association. The results demonstrated that 89% of the nurses were diploma holders, 9% of the nurses were graduates and 2%of them were post graduates.66% of the nurses were in the age group of 27-34years of age, 94%of them were females, 34% of them have 10–14 years of work experience. 97% of them felt that they had difficulty with assertive communication. Hence the nurse managers can develop EI and become experts in self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, motivation, empathy and social skills.
