Women in the reproductive age group have a menstrual cycle 11-12 times a year for approximately 30-40 years, each cycle lasting 2-7 day, from menarche to menopause which means that a woman spends approximately 3000 days of her life menstruation. Visually challenged girls span through the year of transition from childhood to adulthood which is usually between the age of 11 - 13 years. The visually challenged girls experiences drastic changes in physical cognitive psychological and sexual area during menstruation if it is not properly managed
1) To assess the pre test and post test level of knowledge and practice regarding menstrual hygiene among the visually challenged girls. 2) To assess the effectiveness of Braille method of structured teaching programme on level of knowledge and practice regarding menstrual hygiene among visually challenged girls. 3) To determine the association between pre test level of knowledge and practice regarding menstrual hygiene with selected demographic variable.
Pre experimental one group pre test post test design was used in the study. Sample was selected by using purposive sampling technique with the size of 30 samples. Pretest Level of knowledge and practice of menstrual hygiene among visually challenged adolescent girls were assessed by using the self structured Braillie method of knowledge questionnaire and checklist. Braillie method of structured teaching programme was given for 30 minutes Post test was conducted after seven days.
The study findings showed that the level of knowledge in pre test mean was 13.03 with standard deviation of 0.479. The post test mean value was 21.23 with standard deviation 0.160. The calculated paired ‘t’ test value t=14.30 was found statically significant at p<0.05 and the level of Practice in pre test mean was 22.73 with standard deviation of 0.282. The post test mean value 54.56 with standard deviation 0.341. The calculated paired ‘t’ test value t=22.83 was found statically significant at p<0.05. Hence the research hypothesis is accepted There is a significant difference between the pre test and post test level of knowledge and practice on menstrual hygiene among visually challenged girls.
On the basis of the study findings the investigator has concluded that the Braille method of structured teaching programme is effective in increasing the knowledge and practice among visually challenged adolescent girls.
