Abstract

This study assesses the knowledge of weaning foods among postnatal mothers in Chennai, focusing on the transition from breastfeeding to family foods. A quantitative, non-experimental descriptive design was used, involving 50 postnatal mothers selected through non-probability convenience sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires to evaluate demographic variables and knowledge of weaning foods, analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results showed that 30% of mothers had inadequate knowledge, 23.3% had moderate knowledge, and 47.7% had adequate knowledge of weaning foods. A significant association was found between educational status and the number of children concerning knowledge about weaning. The discussion emphasizes the need for enhanced education on weaning practices to address gaps in knowledge, which can lead to childhood malnutrition and developmental issues. Health education sessions were conducted to improve understanding among mothers about proper weaning foods. In conclusion, the study highlights the importance of nursing interventions and community support in promoting awareness of weaning practices. Future research should target larger populations and compare weaning practices among different demographic groups to further enhance infant nutrition and health outcomes.
