Abstract

Breastfeeding plays a crucial role in the health, growth and development of babies and has benefits for the mother too. A woman’s confidence in her breastfeeding ability is positively influenced by her exposure to breastfeeding and her personal breastfeeding experience.

(b) To correlate the breastfeeding outcomes among postnatal mothers in experimental and control group. (c) To associate the breastfeeding outcomes with the demographic variables and clinical data among postnatal mothers in experimental and control group.

A quasi-experimental study with posttest only design was conducted to assess the effectiveness of promotion of breast-feeding intervention tool (PROBIT) on breastfeeding outcomes (knowledge, attitude and postnatal wellbeing) among postnatal mothers in selected hospitals, Chennai. 50 Samples were selected as per criteria, 25 were assigned as experimental and 25 as control group. The data was collected using a Self structured questionnaire, modified IOWA feeding attitude scale and checklist on postnatal well-being.

Mean difference in knowledge score is 4.36, attitude 13.44 and postnatal wellness score 2.76. On an average, in post test, experiment group postnatal mothers gained 17.44% knowledge score than control group; 15.81% attitude score than control group; 23.00% wellness score than control group. Significant positive moderate correlation found between knowledge score and wellness score; significant positive fair correlation between attitude and wellness score. Age and education of mothers had significant association (p < 0.0)1 with the post test knowledge scores also age and habitant of mothers had significant association (p < 0.01) with the post test attitude and postnatal well-being scores.
