Effectiveness of hydrotherapy on dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls.

Abstract

Menstrual disorders may not only reduce a woman's quality of life, but it may also cause serious economic losses related to decreased productivity. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of hydrotherapy on dysmenorrhoea among adolescent girls. The objectives of the study were “to assess the level of dysmenorrhoea before and after hydrotherapy, to determine the effectiveness of hydrotherapy on dysmenorrhoea and to associate the level of dysmenorrhoea with the demographic variables. The design chosen was pre experimental with one group pre and post test. The Structured questionnaire was prepared to collect the demographic data and numerical pain scale was to assess the level of dysmenorrhoea. The validated tool was analyzed for reliability and feasibility through the pilot study. By using convenient sampling technique, a group of 30 girls were selected. The hydrotherapy was given at regular intervals during menstruation after the pretest. The data obtained using these tools were analyzed in the form of descriptive and inferential statistics. Major findings of study were, regarding dysmenorrhoea, in the pretest, 6.66% of girls had worst possible pain, 36.66% had very severe pain, and 56.66% had severe pain. But in the post test 6.66% had no pain, 3.33% had mild pain, 13.3% had moderate pain, 50% had severe pain, 23.3% had very severe pain and 3.33% had worst possible pain. Paired “t” test showed the “t” value of 2.85 which is significant at p<0.05 level. The study findings revealed that, there was a significant reduction in the level of dysmenorrhoea among girls after giving hydrotherapy.
