Assessment of the impact of mother craft on management of postnatal challenges among postnatal mothers in selected hospitals, Chennai

Labour is a wondrous act of nature and unique to every childbearing woman.During prenatal period, prenatal education is given in relation to foetal growth and development, maternal changes, threatened miscarriage, diabetes, exercises, stress, nutrition, drugs, childbirth, breast feeding or bottle feeding, daily foetal movement monitoring, childbirth preparation, nipple assessment, postpartum care check-up, emotional changes, perineal care, safer sex, immunization, and child care (Wong, 2006).

The research approach was quantitative in nature. The study was conducted among 60 primi and multi mothers with episiotomy. Samples were selected using non probability convenient sampling technique. The demographic data was collected using structured interview schedule, mother craft was assessed using checklist, visual analogue scale and modified Mc Gill Pain Questionnaire was used to assess the pain score and its characteristics by self-report. Wound was inspected using REEDA scale by the investigator. Activities Daily Living (ADL) was observed by the investigator using Modified Katz Index of Independence in ADLs.

The result showed that There was a positive correlation (r= 0.732) of mother craft with ADL at p<0.001 level of significance, and there was no significant correlation of mother craft with pain perception, pain intensity, and wound inflammation.

There was a statistically significant association between level of pain with occupation at 5% level of significance and there was no statistically significant association between management of postnatal challenges with demographic variables such as para, religion, educational status, family monthly income and type of family.
