Menstrual cycle that do not follow a rhythmic pattern or whose pattern differs significantly from that expected as normal are called abnormal uterine bleed.
Assess the prevalence of menstrual disorders among adolescent girls; Identify the modifiable and non-modifiable risk factors of menstrual disorders among cases and controls.
Non experimental quantitative research approach and retrospective research design (case control design) was adopted. The study was conducted among 60 adolescent girls who included 20 adolescent girls with menstrual disorders in case group and 40 adolescent girls in the control group. The samples were selected by using stratified sampling technique. The data collection tool includes interview schedule on socio demographic Performa, checklist on menstrual characteristics and structured questionnaire on factors related to menstrual disorders.
The prevalence rate of menstrual disorders among adolescent girls were 43.50%; There was a significant association between dietary choices such as broasted chicken (x2 =18.63, vegetables (x2 =7.75, df=2); backed foods (x2 =5.51,df=1,p<0.05). The chi square value of leisure time activities and exercises like active participation in sports activities, time spend with mobiles/laptop in a day, usual bedtime, usual wake up time, involvement in regular exercises and family history were significant at 0.05 level. Hence there was a significant association between menstrual disorders and family history of menstrual disorders.
Menstrual disorders are common among adolescent girls. Many factors like adolescent girls with provision of sports hour had 4.03 times risk for menstrual disorders, mobiles/ laptop in a day had 1.65 times risk, bedtime after 9 pm had 5.57 times and overburden with studies had 2.18 times risk for menstrual disorders.
