Effectiveness of self care management education on knowledge and self-care skills among mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus

Gestational diabetes mellitus is defined as glucose intolerance of variable degree with its onset or first recognition during the present pregnancy, prevalence may range from 2.4 to 21 per cent of all pregnancies. Hence this study aimed to assess the effectiveness of self -care management education for mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus on knowledge and self-care skills.

The study used a one group pre-test post-test design with 50 gestational diabetes mellitus mothers with at 800 bedded KMCH hospital. The pre-test and post-test were conducted before and after the self-care management education using a self-structured questionnaire and check list. The descriptive and inferential statistics were done using SPSS 20 to perform frequency, mean, standard deviation, paired t test and chi-square calculations.

Were as follows; the t value comparing pre-test and post-test knowledge score was 2.827 p<0.005 and t value comparing pre-test and post-test self-care management skill was 5.292p<0.005. The study showed some demographic and clinical variables has no association and some demographic and clinical variables has association.

The findings indicate that the self-care management education was effective in improving knowledge and skills of mothers with gestational diabetes mellitus.
