Abstract

Infant apnoea is the recurrent episodes with cessation of breathing for 20 seconds or longer associated with decreased heart rate, cyanosis and pallor. A newborn baby on assessment initially revealed Apnoea of Prematurity. Biochemistry investigations showed neonatal jaundice in the second week of life. Rigorous medical and nursing care aided in the treatment of the new-born resulting in positive prognosis with weight gain by the third week of life, improved biochemistry levels and better assessment findings. Research into the development of respiratory control in preterm infants has encouraged understanding the pathogenesis and treatment of Apnoea of Prematurity.
