This paper throws light on the evolution of centre-state relations in Jammu and Kashmir. Beginning with a brief introduction about the history of the state, the main events like circumstances leading to signing of instrument of accession and the demand of the state leaders for a special status to the state alongwith the incorporation of Article 370 have been discussed. Moreover the agreements and accords reached between Union and State governments have also been discussed. Besides various efforts of the Union government to curtail the autonomy granted under Article 370 have also been discussed. Last but not the least, the implications of dilutions of special status have been discussed and it has been suggested that the leaders, both at the union and state levels should rise above the personal and partisan interests to maintain cordial central state relations.
