Abstract

The British East India Company which entered in India in seventeenth century became the political master in the later eighteenth century. The rule of the British Colonial power exercised its authority and introduced many policies which disturbed the Indians. The atrocities done by the British administration was another factor for the discontentment of the people. As a result of the policies of the British East India Company, a revolt broke out in 1857. Many known and unknown persons came forward as the leaders of the rebels. The brother duo of Jagdishpur in Bihar, Kunwar Singh and Amar Singh were one of the examples who were instrumental in the spread of the revolt in northern India. The natives of Bihar, both led the revolutionary activities also in the territory of the United Provinces or territory earlier known as ‘Oudh’ (Awadh). The present research paper discusses the valour, leadership, challenges created by them to the British power and sacrifice of these two brothers in the revolt of 1857.
