Abstract

Every society has some deprived section who because of their caste, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation has to face many obstacles to live a life with dignity and respect. A society could be called egalitarian when each and every citizen, especially the disadvantaged one gets an equal chance to raise their voice and be listened to especially when they are facing some particular issue or problem. In the last few years many cases of gross human rights violation have taken place against SC/STs population in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Several Commissions and Constitutional bodies of government and voluntary organizations are working to address their problems but it is a well-known fact that reality is most of the time different from what it is shown in the papers. Initially, National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes has been formed to work for the upliftment and protection of the rights of SC/STs population which was bifurcated into two Commissions after realizing that problems of both the sections are different from each other and need individual attention. At state level also, sub-branches of these Commissions are working to look after issues and problems of SC/ST’s through grievance cells. The aims of the present study are to check the awareness level of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes respondents regarding SC/ST commission grievance cell and constitutional and legal provisions given for them, to know the experience accordingly.
