Abstract

This paper is an attempt to examine the facts determining the “Women's empowerment and their role in development”. It has been observed that women's role in development is very crucial and it is more effective if she is empowered. A small scale study has been conducted to determine the role of education and other government/non government programmes for rural women's empowerment and its impact on development. The analysis of this study indicates that the active participation in development is of those women who are empowered rather being educated or not. No doubt education plays an important role in women's empowerment but rural women in hilly state needs opportunity and freedom to participate in any educational or developmental programmes for their empowerment. Thus education, empowerment and development are interlinked especially for rural women of hilly areas.
