Abstract

Domestic violence is reality of present day society. With the growth and development it has assumed graver proportions. Growth of egoistic, materialistic tendencies and individualism have been responsible for domestic violence in competitive globalized world. Newer forms of domestic violence due to technological advancements have come to light. Today most trustworthy relationships are also at stake. Home which used to be a secured place for women has turned into torture house. Many kinds of domestic violence occur within the boundaries of a house, some of which are abuse of girl child from their own relatives, female foeticide, infanticide, harassment of married women within domestic relationship and abuse of older women, problem of dowry, dowry death etc. The objective of present paper is to understand the rationale of law for domestic violence, to explain the meaning of domestic violence and to evaluate the important provisions of the Act. Paper also explains procedure to be adopted under the Act and various remedies available to victims of domestic violence.
