The British Imperialists ruled India for more than 200 years and this left its impact on the Indian society. Society, to be noted here is not a static body but a process of continuous change--a series of interactions among human beings inhabiting the same. Our discussion centers round a particular section in this society, who by their inherent role is considered to be the sustaining power of the society as a whole. I would like to stress here on the liberation of women and their substantial development in the field of education. The wave of reformist movement in the 19th century led to significant social changes. The firm faith that Mahatma Gandhi and the leaders of National Movement had was that the liberation of the country from the bondage of imperialism would not be possible without the active participation of women who constitute nearly half of the country's population. Women's emancipation in the 19th century can be attributed to female education. It appears to mark the initiation and development of social change. As the worst sufferers from the social evils and superstitions were the women in all aspects of her life--it was her emancipation, which all-social reformists had as their objectives. In view of the women education and emancipation, an all out effort is to be made by the government of each and every country to promote the life of women as a whole with education for each and every girl child inhabiting the state.
