Tribal people comprise one of the largest segments of poor in Indian society. Tribal are been further excluded because of adverse impact of globalization. This paper addresses in detail how the exclusionary forces impinging upon tribal populations that result in multiple forms of deprivation and under-development especially in terms of livelihood; and in detail, the policy initiatives that have been taken up by the government over the years, post independence, for their upliftment and empowerment. The paper tries understand how the market forces interference is further excluding the already marginalized community like scheduled tribes in the process of policy formation and social development in contemporary India. The paper argues that neo-liberal globalization is presenting a challenge to welfare provisioning in the industrialized countries and to the prospects for equitable social development in developing and transition economies. While deliberating and possible interventions, paper has concentrated more and more on empowerment of scheduled tribes by developing short term and long term plan of strategies to address the challenges emerging out of globalization in the contemporary India.
