Effect of popular music culture on university students

Abstract

Music is an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody and harmony. As it carries some meaning and deals with the language and shapes the ideas, disseminates the values thus music is a medium. Broadly music is divided into two types-Serious or Classical Music and Popular Music. Serious music is something-traditional genre of music conforming to an established form and appealing to critical interest and developed musical taste. Whereas, popular music is of general appeal to teenagers and a kind of Hip-Hop, rock'n'roll with more rhythm and harmony that emphasis on romantic love. As John Fiske observes, the meaning of "Popular" is that appeals to the most people who are not a class or social category, but rather a shifting set of social interests and positions that are defined by their subordinate relations to the dominant society. The FM (Frequency Modulation) radio has turned to be an effective medium that is captivating the youth and propelling them to cultivate certain behavioural patterns. Studies have proved that music can effect on the brain that triggers activity in an area of the brain called the nucleus accumbens. And also it influences another brain area called the superior temporal gyrus that intimately involved in the experience of music. For better understanding of the internal-link between FM (popular) music and human behavior; a study has been conducted among the university students of Patna.
