Abstract

In the present investigation certain ecological aspects of two C4 grasses were studied. Increasing water stress and temperature reduced percentage germination in both the grasses. Red-light promoted germination while far-red light inhibited it. Biomass and total leaf area increased with age, rootshoot ratio, specific-leaf-area and leaf-area ratio fluctuated with time while leaf-weight ratio remained unaffected by the age of plant. Further the seeds of Dactylis glomerata Linn. responded well to different concentrations of phytohormones (in ppm) as compared to Festuca-gigantea Linn.. Noticeable response was observed at low concentrations. The percentage germination inD. glomereta was upto 80% and 85% with 5ppm of IAA and GA respectively.
