Bio-diversity is biological capital of the earth. They provides the basis not only for the continuous evolution and maintenance of the life supporting systems, but also for the sustainable economic, scientific, technological, cultural and spiritual development of mankind. For several million years, people around the world have been looking at bio-diversity as a great source of products and services for their day-to-day survival. Plant and animal breeding, development of traditional drugs and medicines, using natural resources for living in all ways in which humans have tapped the biological resources for their benefit. Most of the diversity around us is a result of human quest. However, commercialization of these resources began when people were able to produce specialized products. This article deals with importance and benefit of biodiversity prospecting for sustainable development.
