An ethnobotanical survey carried out among the tribals inhabiting in North Western Tarai Forests of U.P., brought to light a number of plant species used as herbal medicines for the treatment of ophthalmic diseases. During the survey of study area, twenty plant species represented by sixteen families and nineteen genera were recorded by interviewing traditional herbalist, local healers and elderly men and women of the society. The tribal population of the area primarily depends on these plant species to cure their various eye problems such as cataract, conjunctivitis, eye allergies, retinal problems etc. Phytochemical and clinical investigations of these plants are desirable for more useful and interesting results.
