Aqueous, culture supernatant and organic extracts of N. commune were evaluated for their in vitro antibacterial activity against four Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus cereus, and Bacillus pumilus) and four Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi, and Klebsiella pneumoniae). The methanol extract showed more potent activity than other organic and aqueous extracts. No antibacterial activity was detected in dichloro methane extracts, hexane extract and culture supernatant. No inhibitory effect was found against K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa and S. typhi. Gram positive bacteria were found more susceptible as compared to Gram-negative bacteria.
