Effect of Salinity on Growth of Berseem (Trifolium alexandrinum L.)

Abstract

Two cultivars of berseem (salt tolerant JHB-146 and salt sensitive JB-5) were exposed to salinity levels of 0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 dSm−1. Inhibitions in extension growth, dry weight of root, shoot and leaflets progressively decreased with increasing levels of salinity. The most deleterious effects were recorded at 24 dSmr1 at different durations. The length and dry weight of shoot and root were either enhanced or were least affected by 4 and 8 dSnr1 at different durations in both cultivars. In contrast, most inhibitory effect was shown by JB-5.
