In the present paper an attempt has been made to review the work of Indian Phycologists on cytogenetics of algae with particular reference to the effect of chemicals. Various chemicals which can effect algal members are antibiotics, pesticides, alkylating agents, pharmaceutical drugs, insecticides and radioprotective chemicals. In this paper effect of antibiotics specially, on certain members of algae is taken into account.
