Abstract

Enteromorpha minima Neag. (Chlorophyta) parenchymatous thalluses were collected while growing attached to rocks at the bank of the river Yamuna at Allahabad. The alga survived for more than 4 months when cultured in liquid Bold's basal medium at 22 ± 1°C temperature and 40 μmol m−2 s−1 of white light intensity for 16 h per day in a culture chamber. The alga lost survival and die earlier when cultured under physical or physiological water stress (2 to 6% agarized solid media or 0.2 to 0.8 mol/L NaCl-containing liquid media, respectively), visible light stress (0, 2 or 10 μmol m−2 s−1 of light intensity) or following dry storage in desiccators (for 10 to 60 min at 30- 33% relative humidity), heat stress (of 40°C for 15 min) or UV- C stress (of 0.96- 5.76 kJ/m2). No stress condition induced any reproduction in the alga.
