Abstract

Plant defensins are a prominent family of cationic peptides in the plant kingdom. It constitutes an innate immune system of plant. They are structurally and functionally related to defensins that have been previously characterized in mammals and insects. As potent defenders in protecting plants from pathogenic fungal attack, plant defensins are presumed to play an important role in the innate immunity of plants and are expected to find applications in the production of transgenic crops. This review discusses about the present comprehensive information regarding classification, biological role, molecular characterization, and importance of plant defensins.
