The aim of the present study was to evaluate the utilization of Azolla microphylla extracts as potential source of antimicrobial compounds. Methanolic extracts prepared from the organism were screened against several strains of plant pathogenic bacteria and the extracts showed antibacterial activity against several strains of Xanthomonas. A preliminary phytochemical screening revealed significant amount of phenolics and flavonoids in the extracts. The results show the potential of aquatic pteridophyte Azolla microphylla as a rich source of antimicrobials which could be exploited against certain plant pathogenic bacteria.
