Abstract

Field experiments were conducted in December 2013 to May 2014 to study the effect of Nitrogen (N) and Potassium (P) on the Growth and quality characters of Onion. The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture Garden, Department of Horticulture, Udai Pratap College (Autonomous Institute), Varanasi (U.P.) during the rabi Season. Average day/night mean temperature, humidity during the crop duration were measured 40.5°C/9.4°C, 79%/16%. The treatments consisted of four levels of nitrogen and potassium (control, 25, 50, 75 and 100 kg/ha) laid out in split-plot design with three replications. Results revealed that N significantly affected plant height, number of leaves, diameter of stem, fresh weight of plant, post-harvest observations, fresh weight of bulb, length of individual bulb, diameter of individual bulb, volume of bulbs, specific gravity of bulb, total soluble solids (Brix), number of scales and yield per hectare. Potassium caused formidable impact on these characters but not significantly affected. Nitrogen at the rate of 100 kg/ha gave the best results
