Abstract

HCN a volatile, secondary metabolite produced naturally by number of soil bacteria is known to have a role in biological control of phytopathogens. However, recently the main contribution of biogenic HCN is suggested in the sequestration of iron and consequentially in direct increase of phosphate availability resulting in increased plant growth. Since the major role of HCN is emerging in mobilization of nutrient, in the present study production of HCN is compared with production of SD and PS activity also involved in nutrient mobilization PGPB. Six hundred and fifty PGPB were included in the study and representing different groups. From the results of this study it is clear that production of HCN is comparable with SD and PS activity (57% agreement). As soils are becoming deficient in nutrients at increasing rate, utilization of HCN producing soil bacteria will assume important role in sustainable agriculture in the future.
