Elections are an effective instrument for the assertion of popular sovereignty in the democratic state. However sincere and pious intentions of the rulers might be, in the absence of periodic checks on their powers, there is every possibility of their becoming arbitrary and despotic, so election live within the heart of democracy. Being a democratic country India have reposed faith in the election as the most potent means of non violence and peaceful protest against the arbitrary, unconstitutional acts of the government. In this way role of election has always been considered as the vital element of politics but due to the involvement of the corrupt practices, massive corruption, violence in electoral system, need of change arises to alter order methods of electoral system. Today the question of electoral reforms arises due to the growing deteriorating order in electoral policies and there is a dire need to strengthen our country's electoral system. Recent growth in the increase of election malpractices and moreover the issues that proposals suggested by the various committees established by the government sparked the ongoing debate for Electoral reforms.This article attempted to highlight the various proposal and the various methods taken by the Government of India for measuring free and fair elections.
