Abstract

Uniform Civil Code as envisioned in Article 44 of Constitution of India has not yet been implemented. There have been many debates in public and legislature regarding its implementation. The courts have sometimes asked the governments to take action on it and sometimes tried to distance themselves from this issue saying it as a Directive Principle. But still when we talk about Uniform Civil Code, the ground is not yet ready for its enactment. The governments maintain studied silence and nobody is willing to initiate the process fearing political backlash. However even though the environment is quite negative for Uniform Civil Code, India is gradually and silently progressing towards uniformity in laws. Laws whose subject matters relate to family, maintenance etc. have been made applicable to all irrespective of their personal belief. With the passage of time, and growing education and awareness, the society is becoming more uniform and in future it seems quite possible that someday the society will be ready for Uniform Civil Code without any undue opposition.
