Child Sex ratio in India is continuously declining for several reasons. Most important reason is our preference of sons. Modern technologies which are generally used to assist procreation are misused in our country to satisfy the desire of distracted parents to procreate son and to quench the thirst of few money minded doctors, radiologists, sonologists and geneticists who are taking advantage of the discriminatory social practice of son-preference and daughter-aversion. Such discriminatory practice of averting girl child has led to population imbalance which in turn is creating atmosphere which is not friendly to women and offences against them are on the rise.
This paper has discusses the declining child sex ratio in last few decades and related aspects including causes of such decline. It also discusses the modern diagnostic technologies which are being misused for sex selection and filtering out possibilities of girl child birth. Related legislative efforts and important judicial pronouncements are also discussed. Paper concludes the discussion with suggestions for improving of the socio-economic and cultural fundamentals of our society which has always been detrimental to the interest of our female population.
