Abstract

The Indian cities have been growing at more than double the rate of villages. Urban population in the seventies increased at an annual rate of 3.87% as compared to the rural population's rate of growth of 1.87%.Consequently, in urban areas, the slums are distinct examples of social and economic backwardness. The slums have created many social, moral and democratic problems and the situation has been further aggravated due to uncontrolled migration, unbalanced distribution of income, inadequate community facilities, lack of urban planning, absence of community participation and ineffective legal measures. There have been limited efforts to capture the health of the people in urban slum regions. In the city of Lucknow as well, the population increases at an alarming rate due to rural-urban migration. Due to this great number of slums have originated in the city. Slums in Lucknow have been found to be invariably inhabited by the poorest of the poor. The present empirical study tries to analyze the effect of socioeconomic conditions on the health of women living in two slums of Lucknow city, namely Barabharwara and Gwari Gaon slum.
