The paper is a study on migration which is one of the causes of growth of slums in city. It also explores that with urbanisation, urban population increase while rural population declines. With the growth of population slum dwellers also increase in city who face the problems of housing and other basic amenities. On one hand rural urban migration supply a cheap labour force in city but on the other hand cities of developing country like India are unable to provide the basic and civic services to all these migrant people and therefore in lack of basic amenities squatters develop in the city. Primary as well as secondary data has been used in this study. For primary data the study included 300 sample households from different settlements of Gomtinagar area of Lucknow city. The study concludes that slum dwellers are predominantly rural migrants which is the result of proliferation and growth of slums in the city, which can be controlled by increasing employment opportunity in rural India.
