Abstract

Cosmetic Chemical agent causes a remarkable toxic effect on pregnancy and in teratology also. Embryotoxicity due to Cosmetic Chemicals produces hazards in the development of embryo and it may lead to growth retardation, malformation and death also. The new EU legistations for cosmetic (Seventh amendment) have laid down deadlines for the replacement of animal test in cosmetics. This policy stimulate acceptance of invitro approaches to test embryotoxic potential of compounds in cosmetic products. Cosmetics toxicity testing in vivo animal test are mostly time consuming, expensive and require large number of animals, whereas embryonic stem cell test (EST) designed by the European Center for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM) is currently the most promising invitro assay to predict the embryotoxic potential of cosmetic chemicals.
