The Impact of Working Hours on Subjective Well-being of Working Professionals

Abstract

The effects of number of working hours on subjective well-being (life satisfaction and life happiness) of 90 software professionals were examined. Subjective Happiness Scale (Lyubormisky, 1994) were administered. In-depth interviews were also conducted on 20 employees. Analysis employing correlation, t-test and regression revealed Number of working hours found to be significantly related to subjective well-being. The others factors found responsible for these results were stress, unfriendly work-environment, family-work conflict, work overload, lack of spouse support, responsibilities etc. Limitations, suggestions and implications for further research are discussed.
