Online published on 17 July, 2017.

Abstract

In the BalineseAgama Tirtha elements of Hinduism, Buddhism and Tantra can be observed. Holy water, a sekala container of a niskala power, plays a central role in ceremonies ranging from temple and house purifications, to disease cleansing and blessings. This presentation gives the account of high priestess Ida PedandaMpuBudhaMaharsi Alit ParamaDaksa(“Ida Resi Alit”), a charismatic healer. Her rituals and ceremonies are described based on findings from ongoing fieldwork in Bali, Indonesia. The pedandas's most important role is tied to holy water and her perceived spiritual power. Aspects of her efficacy and power, her role as a charismatic healer within the organized religious system, and her role as a female high priestess are investigated. Findings are situated in literature. Emphasis is placed on the fieldwork methodology aimed at eliciting responses from the Balinese, who are traditionally shy and reserved, even dismissive towards researchers.
